Medicare Advantage

What is a Medicare Advantage Plan?

Medicare Advantage Plans are also called Medicare Part C plans. They're offered by private insurance companies as alternatives to Original Medicare. Each plan provides the benefits included in Medicare Parts A and B. Many plans also include prescription drug coverage. Some even feature extra benefits like vision and dental to help support overall health.

You can enroll in a plan if you have Medicare Parts A and B. You must also live in the plan's service area.

Why choose a Medicare Advantage Plan?

Bundled Coverage

Some plans combine different types of insurance like Prescription Drug coverage.

Out-of-Pocket Limits

You'll have an annual limit on your out-of-pocket expenses for covered services. This could help you limit your total yearly health care costs.

Extra Benefits

A plan may provide extra benefits for your overall well-being.

The two most common types of Medicare Advantage plans

HMO

You'll need to visit Doctors, Healthcare Providers, Hospitals, Lab and Imaging Services within the HMO plan's Network. Emergency exceptions may be made. You'll choose a Primary Care Provider (PCP) who helps coordinate your health care.

Your PCP essentially serves as the Gatekeeper to refer you to Specialist doctors as needed. HMO’s provide managed care.

PPO

PPOs offer the flexibility of choosing care located inside or outside the Network. You'll pay less when using In-Network Doctors, Healthcare Providers, Hospitals, Lab and Imaging Services.

And you won't usually require your PDP’s Referral to see Specialist Doctors.

Enhancing care for Veterans and Spouses

If you're a Veteran or their Spouse with Tricare for Life, a Medicare Advantage plan could enhance your Tricare for Life coverage.

Adding a Medicare Advantage Plan can broaden your care options while offering additional health benefits and in many cases cost savings.
